What do we mean by transportation security and resilience?

TRANSPORTATION SECURITY
Transportation security refers to infrastructure protection and emergency response. Are we safeguarding our transportation system and ready to respond when something happens?
RESILIENCE
Resilience refers to the ability to prepare for changing conditions and withstand, respond to, and recover from disruptions. Are we planning for how to prepare for, and recover from, what may happen in the future?

Threats to Transportation Infrastructure

Transportation leaders need to address questions such as those above to ensure the transportation system is secure and resilient based on the primary threats to the Treasure Valley’s transportation infrastructure:

  • Snow
  • Dam failure
  • Flooding
  • Wildfire
  • Other incidents that lead to road closures, such as vehicle crashes

Mitigation Strategies

Resilience and mitigation strategies are employed to reduce the vulnerability of transportation infrastructure and services to these threats. Some specific strategies include:

  • Locate or relocate critical transportation facilities outside of hazard areas
  • Post and publicize evacuation routes
  • Provide redundancy for critical functions and infrastructure
  • Integrate floodplain management policies into other planning
  • Improve infrastructure to make it more flood-resistant
